What is a transparent background?

The pixels around your subject are empty instead of white, so whatever is behind the picture shows through. Only PNG (and WebP) files can store that; JPG cannot.

Why does my PNG look white or black?

Some viewers draw transparent areas in white or black. Put the PNG on a coloured slide or page and you will see it is transparent.
